Private Jet Operating Costs in Africa: What Owners Actually Budget

New owners almost always budget the purchase price carefully and the running cost loosely. That's backwards. Over a normal ownership period, the operating cost usually adds up to more than the aircraft itself.
Below is how we actually build an annual operating budget for a client, model by model, using the direct operating cost bands we track for the aircraft we sell most across Africa, including a Gulfstream G450 at the large-cabin end of the market.
Direct operating cost by model
Some of these figures come from a directly sourced estimate for that exact model. Others are peer estimates we flag honestly because no model-specific African number has been published yet, treat those as a starting band, not a quote.
| Model | Category | Est. cost/hr | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beechcraft King Air 350i | Turboprop | $1,300-1,500 | Published estimate (SherpaReport/Jettly) |
| Pilatus PC-12 | Turboprop | $2,000-2,425 all-in | Published estimate (LibertyJet) |
| Cessna Citation XLS+ | Midsize | $3,000-3,800 | Published estimate (SherpaReport/Jettly) |
| Cessna Citation Latitude | Midsize | $2,800-3,600 (peer estimate) | Estimate, verify |
| Bombardier Challenger 350 | Super-midsize | $2,625-2,750 | Published estimate (SimpleFlying analysis) |
| Embraer Praetor 600 | Super-midsize | ~$6,569 all-in | Published estimate (AircraftCostCalculator) |
| Gulfstream G450 | Large cabin | ~$6,072 | Published estimate (AircraftCostCalculator) |
| Gulfstream G650 | Ultra-long-range | $6,600-plus | Published estimate (AircraftCostCalculator) |
How much does jet fuel cost in Africa compared to the US or Europe?
We don't have a direct, published Africa-versus-US-or-Europe fuel price comparison, and we're wary of anyone who states one as fact without naming an airport and a date. What we do have are the assumptions baked into published cost models: some use $6 a gallon, others use $9 a gallon, for otherwise comparable aircraft categories.
What we can say from experience is that uplift price varies a lot by airport. Lagos, Johannesburg and Nairobi are competitive, well-supplied hubs. Upcountry strips and smaller regional airports often carry a real premium over those main hubs. Confirm the current uplift price at your specific base before you finalise a mission budget.
What does it cost per hour to fly a midsize jet like a Citation XLS+?
Roughly $3,000 to $3,800 an hour in direct operating cost, in the same band as Hawker 800XP-class midsize jets according to SherpaReport and Jettly's 2026 estimates. That figure bundles fuel burn, the reserve drawn down under the Pratt & Whitney Canada PW545B/C engine program, scheduled maintenance labor and consumables.
It doesn't include hangar, insurance or crew salary, which we treat as fixed annual costs rather than hourly ones, and which need their own line in the budget below. See the full Cessna Citation XLS+ profile for the rest of what to check before buying one.
How much does a private jet pilot earn in Nigeria or South Africa?
We don't have a published salary benchmark for either market, and pay varies enormously by type rating, whether the pilot is on direct payroll or contract, and whether the aircraft requires a two-pilot crew. Crew cost is almost always quoted to us as a monthly all-in retainer per pilot rather than a public salary figure.
One indirect data point: the AircraftCostCalculator models we cite for large-cabin jets assume roughly $165 an hour for labor as part of total direct operating cost. That's a blended maintenance-and-crew-labor assumption inside the model, not a standalone pilot salary. Ask your operator or management company for a current, aircraft-specific quote.

Ask a questionWhat insurance costs apply to private jets operating in Africa?
There's no published Africa-wide insurance rate card in our data. Premiums are quoted per aircraft, based on hull value, pilot experience and where the aircraft is based, a Lagos or Luanda-based aircraft can carry a different risk loading than one based at Lanseria.
This isn't optional paperwork either way: NCAA and the other authorities in this region require a current insurance certificate as part of registration, so get it priced by a specialist aviation insurer before you finalise the deal, not after.
How much does hangar space cost at Lanseria or Wilson Airport?
Neither airport publishes a public rate card. Lanseria (HLA) is South Africa's preferred general-aviation hub, home to ExecuJet's base, the first FBO in Africa to earn IS-BAH accreditation, and you'll find current listings on private jets for sale in South Africa. Wilson Airport (WIL) is Kenya's principal charter and GA hub, served mainly by Phoenix Aviation and ALS, and it enforces a 9pm-to-6am movement curfew for most general-aviation traffic, worth checking against your typical schedule; see private jets for sale in Kenya for what's flying out of there today.
Hangar cost at either field depends on the aircraft's footprint, whether the space is covered or climate-controlled, and current demand at that specific FBO. Request a live quote rather than budgeting a guessed number.
How we actually build an annual operating budget
- Start with direct operating cost per hour for the specific model, multiplied by realistic annual hours.
- Add fixed costs: hangar, insurance and a retained crew, unless you're flying it single-pilot yourself.
- Add an engine program reserve if it isn't already folded into the hourly figure, so a hot-section inspection or overhaul doesn't arrive as a surprise.
- Add a contingency for the items that are genuinely unpublished for Africa, insurance, hangar and crew, and get those quoted live rather than estimated.
- Compare the total against what those same missions would cost on jet charter versus ownership before you commit to buying at all.
Frequently asked questions
Is direct operating cost the same as total ownership cost?
No. Direct operating cost covers the variable per-hour items: fuel, engine reserve, maintenance labor and consumables. It excludes fixed annual costs like hangar, insurance and crew retainer, which keep accruing whether the aircraft flies or sits. Budget both, not just the headline hourly figure.
Why do two sources sometimes quote very different operating costs for the same model?
Fuel price assumptions differ, we've seen $6 a gallon and $9 a gallon used for otherwise comparable aircraft categories, and labor rates and crew-cost bundling vary between sources too. Treat any single published figure as a band, not a guarantee, and ask what assumptions sit behind it before you rely on it.
Does a turboprop really cost that much less to run than a light jet?
Yes. A King Air 350i runs roughly $1,300 to $1,500 an hour against roughly $3,000 to $4,000 an hour all-in for a Phenom 300E, close to half to a third of the cost. It's a large part of why turboprops dominate mining, medevac and safari flying on African strips a jet simply can't use.
Do African bases add any operating cost that buyers in the US or Europe don't budget for?
Yes, mainly airframe corrosion inspection at coastal, high-humidity bases like Lagos or Accra, which several manufacturers flag as a specific check item on their aircraft. Parts lead times can also run longer outside South Africa's more developed MRO network.
How often should I revisit the operating budget once I own the aircraft?
At minimum at every annual inspection cycle, and immediately after any engine program renewal or avionics upgrade, since both can shift the hourly number meaningfully in either direction.
