Buying in Kenya
Private Jets for Sale in Kenya

Nairobi is East Africa's private aviation capital, built around two very different airfields: Wilson, the low-rise general-aviation hub a mile from the CBD, and Jomo Kenyatta International, the country's main international gateway. Kenya is named, alongside South Africa and Nigeria, as one of the three markets leading Africa's fleet growth, and it has the local operator base, Phoenix Aviation, CMC Aviation, ALS, Safarilink, to show for it.
Buyers here split between corporate flight departments and safari-tourism operators, which is why turboprops sit right alongside jets in the same fleet lists. This page sets out realistic 2026 pricing by budget tier, what KCAA registration and Kenya's unusually favourable tax rules involve, and how we run a purchase from first message to delivery. Our Kenya hub has the wider charter and destination picture.
Safari money meets corporate money
Wilson Airport (WIL) is Kenya's principal general-aviation and charter hub, home to Phoenix Aviation and ALS, and it runs a 9pm-6am movement curfew for most GA traffic, worth knowing if you fly late. Jomo Kenyatta International (NBO) is the main international gateway; Kenya Airports Authority was recruiting a dedicated FBO operator for private, charter, diplomatic and medevac traffic as of 2025, which tells you how fast this segment is growing. Mombasa's Moi International (MBA) covers the coast, with smaller-scale bizav infrastructure than Nairobi's two fields.
Nairobi-Johannesburg is the top regional business route out of Kenya, but the larger share of Kenyan charter flying is safari and lodge-access work into the Maasai Mara, Amboseli and the cross-border Tanzania circuit, mostly on turboprops like the Caravan and PC-12, with light jets for longer or higher-status trips. That split matters when you choose an aircraft: a jet built for long intercontinental range is the wrong tool for a Nairobi-Mara lodge run.
KCAA registration and Kenya's tax advantage
Kenyan aircraft carry the 5Y- nationality mark plus a three-letter registration mark assigned by the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA).
Kenya is, on paper, one of the more favourable jurisdictions in Africa for importing a private jet. Aircraft, spare parts and jet fuel imports are duty-free, and the Finance Act 2023 removed VAT on aircraft purchases entirely, while also scrapping the Railway Development Levy and Import Declaration Fees that used to apply. That is a materially better tax position than most neighbouring markets. Rules can still change, so reconfirm current status with KCAA and KRA before you import rather than budgeting off a 2023 news story. Our registration requirements guide lines up KCAA's process against NCAA, SACAA and the other three authorities we track.
What your budget buys in 2026
With that tax picture in mind, here is roughly where each budget tier lands in Kenya's market.
The Pilatus PC-12 is close to the definitive Kenyan aircraft: single-engine simplicity and short-field performance make it standard equipment for lodge transfers and medevac work across Kenya, Tanzania and Botswana (full specs). Buyers moving up from turboprops usually land on the Embraer Phenom 300E, the world's best-selling light jet, for shorter corporate and political trips that do not justify a full midsize aircraft (full specs).
| Budget | Aircraft | 2026 price range (USD) | Fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bush, safari | Pilatus PC-12 | $1.8M - $8.15M | Maasai Mara and Amboseli lodge transfers, unpaved strips |
| Utility turboprop | Beechcraft King Air 350i | $4.1M - $7.4M | Medevac, safari and rough-strip work, pressurized cabin |
| Light jet | Embraer Phenom 300E | $5.975M - $13.5M | Nairobi-Johannesburg, efficient owner-flown trips |
| Midsize | Cessna Citation XLS+ | $6.5M - $13M | Regional business travel with more cabin and range |

Can I register a private jet in Kenya as a foreign owner?
Kenya's registration process runs through KCAA and assigns the 5Y- nationality mark plus a three-letter registration mark. Kenya's published guidance does not set out a specific foreign-ownership restriction, so confirm your situation directly with KCAA, and we can coordinate that step as part of a purchase.
Is a private jet really duty-free and VAT-free in Kenya?
As of the Finance Act 2023, aircraft, spare parts and jet fuel imports are duty-free in Kenya, and VAT on aircraft purchases was removed entirely, along with the Railway Development Levy and Import Declaration Fees that used to apply. This makes Kenya one of the more favourable jurisdictions in Africa for import tax, but rules can change, so reconfirm current status with KCAA and KRA before you import.
What does the 5Y- prefix mean and how is a registration mark assigned?
5Y- is Kenya's nationality mark, applied to every aircraft on the Kenyan civil register. KCAA then assigns a three-letter registration mark specific to that aircraft, which together with the 5Y- prefix forms its full registration.
Should I base a Kenyan-registered jet at Wilson or JKIA?
Wilson Airport is Kenya's principal general-aviation hub, close to Nairobi's CBD, with Phoenix Aviation and ALS as the main FBOs, though it enforces a 9pm-6am movement curfew for most GA traffic. JKIA is the main international gateway and was recruiting a dedicated FBO operator for private and charter traffic as of 2025. Most safari-support turboprops base at Wilson; aircraft flying more international legs often prefer JKIA.
