Who is buying, and what they're flying

Buyers cluster around three groups: oil and gas operators, industrial conglomerates, and political or high-net-worth individuals based in Lagos and Abuja. Corporate flight departments buy mainly for schedule control between Lagos, Abuja and other domestic routes, and to reach London without routing through congested commercial schedules.

Locally advertised pre-owned inventory in 2025-26 has spanned roughly $2.8 million for a Challenger 601-3A up to $8.9 million for a Gulfstream V, and higher for newer or larger aircraft. That range says two things: there is genuine secondary-market liquidity in Nigeria, and most transactions cluster in the midsize-to-large-cabin band rather than at the ultra-long-range top end.

Charter demand backs this up. Lagos-London and Lagos-Abuja are the two most requested routes, and midsize and super-midsize jets, Citations and Challengers, dominate the charter fleet alongside larger aircraft flown on international legs. Here is roughly how the pre-owned market breaks down by budget tier, using the aircraft categories active in Nigeria's advertised inventory.

The Cessna Citation XLS+ sits closest to Nigeria's most commonly advertised price band, and it benefits from an established African parts and service network, worth checking against the coastal humidity common in Lagos before you buy (full specs). At the top end, the Gulfstream G650 is the aspirational flagship for Nigerian and Angolan buyers alike, even though actual ownership stays limited to a handful of operators in resource-wealthy states.

Import duty, VAT and NCAA registration

Every civil aircraft in Nigeria carries a 5N- nationality mark, assigned by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) under the Nig.CARs 2023 rules. Registration runs through NCAA's Form AC-AWS 001A process: proof of ownership, an insurance certificate, airworthiness documentation and the registration fee.

Import cost is the part buyers underestimate. Commercial airlines get a 0% duty waiver on aircraft, engines and parts, but that waiver does not extend to private-use imports. In practice, a private jet import is expected to attract standard ad valorem customs duty, though the exact rate for private aircraft is not published in any guide we could find. Nigeria's standard VAT rate is 7.5%, and whether or how it applies to a jet import is not explicitly confirmed either. Confirm both figures with FIRS and the Nigeria Customs Service before you wire money for the aircraft.

There is a real enforcement backdrop too. A 2025-26 Ministerial Task Force reported the Federal Government has lost more than ₦120 billion over the past decade to unregistered or illegal private charter operations.
