The Citation CJ4 is the longest-legged member of Cessna's single-pilot CJ family: 2,165 nm of published range, a 451 kt top cruise and seating for up to 10. Textron certified it in 2010, refreshed the cabin as the Gen2 in 2021 and now builds a Gen3 with Garmin G3000 PRIME avionics. More than 450 had been delivered by April 2025.

For an African buyer that fleet size means a genuine choice of used airframes, and Textron-authorised support is already on the ground at Lanseria.

Citation CJ4 price in 2026

The Jet Agent's October 2025 market report counted 32 CJ4 and Gen2 aircraft for sale, about 6.8% of the active fleet. Asking prices ran from $5.3 million to $11.95 million, and jets that closed in the six months before the report sold for $6.1 million to $12.6 million. For budgeting we use $5.3 million to $12.6 million as of 2026, an indicative figure we confirm against each specific aircraft.

Most of that gap is generation. Early 2010 to 2013 jets sit at the bottom; Gen2 aircraft, with a lower entry stair, a better galley and wireless cabin controls, command the top, and the report noted the difference keeps widening. Engine program cover and total hours explain the rest.

Flying a CJ4 from Lanseria and Cape Town

Cessna quotes a 3,410 ft take-off field length, a sea-level number. Both Johannesburg airports are high, about 4,500 ft at Lanseria and about 5,500 ft at O.R. Tambo, and December heat stretches the run and trims the weight you can lift. On a long paved runway that rarely cancels a trip; it does decide whether a long leg goes with every seat taken.

Treat the CJ4 as a paved-runway jet. It is the wrong tool for gravel lodge strips, but it covers the domestic city and coast network and most of the region without a stop.

Owning a CJ4 in South Africa or Nigeria

South African owners register it under SACAA with a ZS- mark, and importing from abroad triggers 15% VAT on the customs value. Support is close by: Absolute Aviation's service centre at Lanseria describes itself as Textron Aviation's authorised service facility on the continent and is licensed on Citation jets. Our South Africa buying guide covers CAR47-A1 registration and the SARS side.

In Nigeria the jet takes a 5N- mark from the NCAA under Nig.CARs 2023. Private buyers do not get the customs waiver granted to airlines, no official private-jet duty rate is published, and whether the 7.5% VAT applies needs confirming with FIRS and the Nigeria Customs Service. On a 280 nm Lagos to Abuja shuttle a CJ4 spends more time climbing and descending than cruising, so brakes, tyres and cycles wear faster than the hours suggest. Our Nigeria import cost guide has the paperwork.

What we check on a used CJ4

These separate a good CJ4 from an expensive one:

  • Williams FJ44-4A engine program status and time to the next major inspection on both engines.
  • Which generation it is, original, Gen2 or Gen3, and whether serial number and logbooks agree.
  • Collins Pro Line 21 software on earlier jets, database subscriptions and ADS-B Out compliance.
  • Corrosion in the airframe and wheel wells on jets based at humid coastal airports such as Lagos or Durban.
  • Brake, tyre and damage history, confirmed by an independent pre-purchase inspection.

CJ4 or Phenom 300E?

Most buyers who look at a CJ4 also look at the Embraer Phenom 300E. The Embraer is faster and trades more often; the CJ4 usually costs less to buy and publishes more range. Our comparison of the CJ4, Phenom 300E and PC-24 tests all three on real routes.

On WhatsApp we can share photos, logbook summaries and a full specification sheet for any CJ4 we propose, before you commit to a viewing.

Frequently asked questions

What does a Citation CJ4 cost in 2026?

Used CJ4s were asking $5.3 million to $11.95 million in late 2025, and recent closed sales ran up to about $12.6 million. Early 2010 to 2013 jets sit at the bottom and Gen2 aircraft at the top. These are 2026 market indications; the price of any given jet is confirmed when we source it.

Is the Citation CJ4 single-pilot?

Yes, the CJ4 is certified for single-pilot operation. Insurers still set their own experience requirements, so check the premium and the pilot's type rating before you commit.

Can a CJ4 fly Cape Town to Nairobi nonstop?

Not on published figures. Cape Town to Nairobi Wilson is about 2,210 nm great-circle, beyond the 2,165 nm Cessna publishes, so plan a fuel stop such as Lusaka. Lanseria to Nairobi, about 1,560 nm, is comfortably nonstop.

Can the CJ4 use gravel runways?

Plan on paved runways only. Among the light jets we compare, only the PC-24 holds gravel and grass certification.
